The Swedish electro-pop singer Vanbot finally returns with a follow-up to her critically acclaimed self-titled album released in 2011. Fortunately Vanbot’s new tracks, Hold This Moment and When My Heart Breaks were worth the wait. On them vocalist Ester Ideskog explores her dark side using catchy melodies and twisted synthesizers. Its beautiful and skewed.
Fresh from performances in the US and just before taking the stage at Debaser we spoke with Ideskog about her new single and an album slated for release after the summer.
Are you looking forward to your gig tonight at Debaser?
Oh, I am very excited! Lately we’ve been working a lot with the upcoming album, so I am very happy to do a live show as a contrast to all the work in the studio.
What can your fans expect to see?
We will play some brand new songs that are not yet released! And it’s kind of premiere for a new set up with only 3 persons on stage.
Do you get nervous performing in front of larger audiences?
I am always very tired before a show, it seems to be my way to express my nervousness!
How have you evolved as an artist?
I think my song writing process is more simple now than before, I’m using fewer elements and let them build the landscape. Trying to find simple ways to build something interesting. I’m inspired by the idea of creating tension between the beautiful and the skewed, to find a balance between catchy melodies and twisted synthesizers.
You recently released When My Heart Breaks. What experiences shaped the tone of this release?
Most of my songs come from a personal experience, or from people around me. When My Heart Breaks is about that impossible relationship that seem like an endless battle, yet you wouldn’t want to be without it. You know the one that is so important that you would fall apart if something were to happen to it.
For this title, I worked with guest-producer Johan Eckeborn who´s a producer and songwriter for Jonathan Johansson among others. He really found the nerve in that song!
Describe you fashion style?
I think it’s a pretty nordic style. I wear lot of black clothes and I like to work with silhouette, contrast and layers. Simple but distinctly!
