Threads: For the love of yoga and fashion

Self-taught fashion designer Camilla Wellton chose her path when she “fell in love with the door leading to the tremendous healing power the creating of personal clothing” opened for her. A book worm and pop science nerd, she is in love with yoga and based by Mariatorget on Södermalm in Stockholm.

Why did you decide to become a fashion designer?

Clothes help me shape my character and strengthen myself. That’s been one of my favourite preoccupations since being a small kid. Dress exactly how I like no matter what anyone has to say about. I need it!
I refused to study fashion because I didn’t want someone else’s opinion messing with one of my primal needs.

How long have you been working?

I made my first suit when I was 10. I got my first customer 13 years ago, and my first collection 12 years ago. I’m working on my brand as it is now since the fall of 2009, although I was still running the brand on a smaller scale during the years when I took uni courses for the pure pleasure of it.

What is it that you like working with your own brand?

I don’t like it. I love it!

What do you use for inspiration?

Depth of emotion inspires me, that goes beyond my sense of being one person; feeling my connectedness with everything gives me creative urges. Experiencing the magic inherent in existing triggers my creativity, realizing that I need to create sets me into action. Without making clothes I’d go nuts – in a bad way! It’s my art. I accept it, and inspiration comes.

What are your plans for the future?

World domination!

You work out of Stockholm. What is it that makes this a great place for a base?

My friends and family, the water – the fact that you can take a swim everywhere! It’s fantastic!! And the greenery, the cozyness of Mariaberget and Djurgården, and the fact that there is easy access to everything by bike because the city is so small. I also love the small but warm outdoor tech/house scene.
