Liquorice

Whether solid or liquid, sweet or salty, chewy or hard, liquorice is making a comeback. Spritmuseum has decided to honour the current liquorice trend by creating an exhibition devoted to the black candy, and a museum dedicated to alcohol is perhaps a fitting venue, as many of our most beloved spirits bear the flavour of liquorice.

“Liquorice has always been popular in the Nordic countries, but in the last decade there’s been a big chocolate trend and liquorice kind of became forgotten. But now it’s time for liquorice again and people are starting to discover how good it really is,” says Anna-Karin Svanberg, exhibition producer. “Liquorice is mostly known to Swedes as candy, but it’s actually much more than that. It’s a spice used for flavoring all sorts of things, including alcohol, for example vodka, schnapps and spirits from the Mediterranean like absinthe and so on. And then of course it’s been used as medicine for several centuries. So there’s a lot more to it than people think.”

The opening of the exhibit at the beginning of December was a hit, with over 1,000 guests in attendance, all eager to participate in liquorice tastings which will continue on selected Saturdays over the coming weeks.

The exhibition will run till May next year, nicely coinciding with the Stockholm Liquorice Festival at the end of April.
