Air

With interest in rare vintage pieces and other former classics showing no signs of slowing, 2017 has seen a boom in design reissues – pioneering, design-strong creations making a comeback. One example is the Air bench, designed by Thomas Sandell for Asplund, which has been getting high bids at online auctions during the last couple of years. The lightweight, perforated metal bench was originally introduced in 1991, then taken out of production before it was picked up yet again for this year’s Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair.

Domo

Not to be confused with the boss of infamous New York crime family Colombo, Joe Cesare Colombo was an Italian industrial designer who lived between 1930 and 1971. In recent years, several design manufacturers have reissued Colombo’s striking pieces, and up and coming Danish design brand Karakter is reintroducing no less than six of his futuristic “machines for living”. Our favourite is the Domo collection of lighting from 1965 – the wall lamp in black aluminium features the distinctive arched branch, which makes the piece so eye-catching.

Vienna

One of this year’s most lauded Swedish reissues was carried out by Gemla, Sweden’s oldest furniture producer with its base in Diö, in the deep forests of Småland. New owner Benny Hermansson has dug deep down into the 150-year-old archive in search of gems, and pulled out Vienna, a light chair in the traditional Wiener café style. Originally designed in 1907, the bentwood chair has been given a thoughtful update in the form of a matte stain finish. We can’t wait to see what else the tiny town of Diö has to offer.
