Peer Gynt is the enormous trickster and tragic figure of Norwegian drama, pulled from a fairy tale by Henrik Ibsen and transformed into a larger-than-life rogue who struggles with himself and the weight of life as he journeys through a shape-shifting dreamworld. There’s enough depth and drama in this verse play that a director can steer it onto multiple paths, so now we can see Michael Thalheimer’s take on it again when this production returns to Dramaten after its debut in 2018. It’s the first version of the play at the theatre since Ingmar Bergman’s back in 1991.
