commoningtimes

The common space in society is under threat. Private forces are invading all areas of life, and usually with short-term gain rather than long-term good in mind. According to the people behind Commoning Times, you need to understand that concept to work against the social, political and ecological dissemination that is typical for our times. Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri, the two artists behind the project, are using their time at Tensta Konsthall and IASPIS, as well as future artist residencies, to share their ideas and stimulate debate and action around the common. It consists of a range of illustrations, notes, diagrams, video, performance, talks and (un)workshops.

Since 1999 Anastas and Gabri have been running the influential 16 Beaver Group in New York’s financial district. It’s a platform for the production and presentation of art, politics and economics and home to the idea that became Occupy Wall Street. If politicians can’t do anything about raging capitalism, turning everything into a question of short-term financial gain, maybe art can be the saviour.

Commoning Times is at Tensta Konsthall until 28 September.
