Pixie Carnation consists of five guys from Malmö. Their music is a mixture of indie pop with a touch of folk too. They just released the single, Young And Free from the band’s first upcoming album – The New World Record recently which hits stores on May 6.
Want to see them live? On May 8 they perform at Lilla Hotellbaren for free. We caught up with the band to learn more about what they have planned over the coming few months.
Pixie Carnation is a Malmö-based rock band, sprung out of the idea of Tobias Hellkvist and Ola Pålsson who wanted to start a band and began writing songs together a few years ago. The band now also consists of bassist Lars Kjelldén, drummer Kristoffer Rudberg and keyboardist Niklas Larsson (who actually lives in Stockholm).
What does the name ‘Pixie Carnation’ mean?
It’s the name of a type of small flower, a small carnation. So it doesn’t have a meaning in that sense. Just a name that we thought had a nice ring to it.
How do you define your music style?
That’s always a tricky question! But it’s very simple music really – very direct and catchy songs, spiced with string arrangements and a big sounding production in general. We’ve always pictured our songs being performed on bigger stages, which probably has affected the sound somehow.
What inspired the video for Keep It Coming?
In this particular video for ‘Keep It Coming’, it’s actually the vision of director and script writer Dan Anders Carrigan, a good friend of ours. He heard the song and approached us with the idea of making a video for it. He mentioned ‘contrast’ as a keyword, but at the same time he wanted to reflect us and who we are (three of us are working in the harbor in Malmö) and we think that showed quite well in the video. Mixed with some pretty unexpected things as well of course.
How have you evolved since you formed in 2007?
I think it’s fair to say that we are better musicians now, if just a little. Tighter as a band, we’ve been playing these songs for a long time now. Other than that i think we’re pretty much the same people now, with the same ambitions and dreams.
Your upcoming album – The New World Record – will be released soon. What can your fans expect?
Hopefully 40 minutes of energetic and joyful music which can be easily digested in your everyday situation!
