Even though Markus Svensson survives on his job helping people with Asperger’s, he’s still a musician at heart. Despite the fact that his day job seldom allows him to dedicate all his time to write and play music, he still does everything he can to produce great music.

There’s some confusion regarding The Tarantula Waltz, because even though Markus Svensson is the sole founder and driving force, the band was called simply Tarantula for a while – perhaps a nod to the old novel by Bob Dylan – and Svensson has also performed solo as The Tarantula Waltz. Anyhow, there’s no real doubt that Markus Svensson is The Tarantula Waltz, all the way from songwriting to recording and performing. Which has been done less so lately, due to Svensson having a kid a while back.

But despite that he’s been recording his latest album, Tinder Stick Neck, due for release on April 23. The first single, Scandinavian minds, is an almost eerie, cowboy-y highway track with characteristic drum brushes and a fast-picking acoustic guitar which deals with the theme’s of anxiety and death, in a great way.

The Tarantula Waltz is at Södra Teatern on April 9.
