Late October sees the introduction of a new monthly club celebrating 50 years of influential music and the history of indie. Christened The Fringe, it is the brainchild of TS contributor Gulla Hermannsdottír and Noel Pretorius, who met through Stockholm’s Lindy Hop scene and bonded over their mutual love of indie music.

“We felt there was a lack of indie clubs catering to our age group, for people that came up in the Britpop-90s and still hold their fringes dear. A lot of the indie clubs we’ve visited in Stockholm are full of 18-year-old hipster kids dancing to Håkan Hellström. We’d like to try to get the thirtysomethings back into their tattered Converse and onto the dance floor, and at the same time introduce those 18-year-olds to real indie anthems!”

They go on to describe The Fringe as a golden jubilee, celebrating the past 50 years of influential music. “1963 is generally known as the year that would go on to define the path of rock and pop music; it’s the year that The Beatles cut their first record, which opened the floodgates for Beatlemania and the British Invasion. Rock music would never be the same again.”

“Our plan is to kick the club off with a countdown, starting in 2013 and playing a well-selected song from every year, right down to 1963. Everyone’s invited to come shake their fringes with us and commemorate the origins and history of indie music!”
