Opera Highlight: King Roger

King Roger

Karol Szymanowski was one of the brightest Polish composers of the early 20th century, one who attempted to create a Polish national style of music before he died of tuberculosis in 1937. The most famous of the works he left behind is King Roger, an opera in three acts that sees a cold, rational, logical king encounter a mystical pagan shepherd, who proceeds to confront him with acts he can’t explain. This production at Kungliga Operan, a collaboration with Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, is the first time King Roger will be performed in Sweden.

Kung Roger, Kungliga Operan, plays until April 23
