SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Kosmism
DESCRIPTION:Anton Vidokle is an artist with an impressive CV\, having founded the digital publishing platform e-flux way back in the early days of the internet in 1998. This new exhibition at Tensta Konsthall features three of his films that investigate the concept of Russian Cosmism\, an early 20th century philosophical movement that took in a wide range of ideas and later influenced early Soviet cultural institutions. The films\, under the title Immortality for All: A Film Trilogy on Russian Cosmism\, will be shown along with sculptures by Arseny Zhilayev inspired by searches through Soviet museum archives. \nKosmism\, Tensta Konsthall\, on display until Jan 20 2019 \nPhoto: From Anton Vidokle’s film This is Cosmos

SUMMARY:Ballet Highlight: The Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:Look\, we’re heading into Christmas season now and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. So the various cultural institutions of Stockholm are getting their programmes into gear for a little more of a yuletide feeling. And Kungliga Operan are blessed in that regard\, as they can pull out The Nutcracker (Nötknäpparen) as their Christmas special. This version dates back to 1995\, with choreography from Pär Isberg and set in the world of children’s author Elsa Beskow. Christmas Eve comes to the home of orphans Peter and Lotta\, and strange things begin to happen… \nThe Nutcracker (Nötknäpparen)\, Kungliga Operan\, Playing between Dec 5 & Jan 18 \nPhoto: Elisabeth Toll

SUMMARY:Public Luxury
DESCRIPTION:After a brief closure for renovations between March and May\, ArkDes returns in June with the exhibition Public Luxury. Featuring the work of architects and designers\, the exhibition focuses on experimental work that asks how architecture interacts with and makes possible our society. The goal here is to spark debate and search for solutions to the big challenges faced by Swedish society. How can we create architecture that not only meets basic needs\, but also goes beyond that and makes ‘the good society’ possible? With contributions from Dansbana!\, Jonas Dahlberg\, Johan Celsing and more\, this exhibition aims to find out. \nPublic Luxury\, ArkDes\, on display from Jun 1 \nPhoto: Jonas Dahlberg Studio

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Tove Styrke
DESCRIPTION:There are many paths to pop stardom\, but Tove Styrke’s took a little bit of a swing. The singer and musician initially came up through talent show Idol\, and released a self-titled debut album back in 2010. But she then suffered from burn out and took some time off\, before exploding back onto the scene with Kiddo\, an album of high-octane\, fizzing pop music. And three years on\, she returned with new album Sway\, her best to date\, a lush\, expansive record full of hits. She goes on a Swedish tour this winter\, coming to Berns in December with support from theatrical-pop newcomer Grant. \n \nTove Styrke\, Berns\, Dec 15 \nPhoto: Emma Svensson \nRead More: An Interview With Tove Styrke

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Dolores Haze
DESCRIPTION:Three years ago\, Dolores Haze released debut album The Haze Is Forever as Stockholm’s coolest new punks\, four kids barely out of school playing abrasive\, fuck-you rock music. Three years on\, things have changed a little. After recalibrating as a three-piece (due to losing a member to an alpaca farm obviously)\, they’ve expanded their sound from short\, sharp punk songs on their comeback album Play Hard\, Fuck Hard\, Love Hard\, from the slow dream-pop of the title track to the brash electro-pop of FLIP. They’re heading out on tour to push the record this winter\, landing in their hometown at Debaser. \n \nDolores Haze\, Debaser Strand\, Dec 14 \nPhoto: Press

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: MGMT
DESCRIPTION:It’s unfair to call MGMT’s new album Little Dark Age a ‘comeback’. After all\, the duo’s 2010 album Congratulations might be their best\, and their 2013 self-titled wasn’t bad either. But those were both weird records\, and Little Dark Age is definitely the most conventionally listenable music they’ve made since they became monstrously big with their debut Oracular Spectacular\, fuelled by the mega-hits Kids\, Time To Pretend and Electric Feel. If you’re just going to this show to see those songs\, well\, you’ll also get their new slick electro-pop tunes like Me And Michael and She Works Out Too Much into the bargain. \n \nMGMT\, Nobelberget\, Dec 6 \nPhoto: Danny Clinch

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Jaakko Eino Kalevi
DESCRIPTION:Finish pop auteur Jaakko Eino Kalevi has been absent from the solo album game since 2015’s self-titled record\, but now he’s finally back. He made his return in August with Emotions In Motion\, a brisk\, slick synth-pop track\, and followed it up with People In The Centre Of The City. His new album Out Of Touch\, out in October\, takes themes like internet-immersement and urban fatigue and pushes them through Jaakko’s pop music via Soviet disco filter. It comes to Fasching in late November. \n \nJaakko Eino Kalevi\, Fasching\, Nov 30 \nPhoto: Maxime Imbert

SUMMARY:Opera Highlight: Don Quijote
DESCRIPTION:Increasingly in the news recently is the prominence of fantasy\, and the idea of a lot of people deciding to indulge their fantastical visions of the world rather than confront it head-on. The journalist Kurt Andersen’s book Fantasyland\, a history of America from the point of view of its unreality issues\, hit the New York Times bestsellers list last year. In this climate\, it seems appropriate to bring Miguel de Cervantes’ reality-challenged Don Quixote back to life again. That’s what Folkoperan are doing\, with an operatic version of the novel hitting their stage this autumn\, with Lars Arvidson in the title role. \nDon Quijote\, Folkoperan\, playing until Nov 30 \nPhoto: Markus Gårder

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: MØ
DESCRIPTION:MØ’s journey from teenage punk playing at squat raves around Europe to major label-signed popstar has been one of the more curious narratives in music over the last few years. After releasing an album of heavy\, rough-edged art pop called No Mythologies To Follow in 2014\, her career pivoted around one song\, the monster hit Major Lazer collab Lean On. Now firmly on the breezy\, tropical pop path\, she releases her long-awaited follow-up album Forever Neverland at the end of October and comes to Stockholm in November. \n \nMø\, Annexet\, Nov 28 \nPhoto: Jack Bridgland

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Highasakite
DESCRIPTION:Norwegians Highasakite were always pop\, but always a band. Now\, pared down to a duo after the release of their dark 2016 album Camp Echo\, Ingrid Helene Håvik and Trond Bersu are embarking on a new adventure. The debut single of the new era\, 5 Million Miles indicated that they were aiming down the throats of pop’s mainstream\, and the big sound and choruses of their follow-up singles confirmed it. The latest\, I Call Bullshit\, takes their sound in a softer direction\, and it’s the start signal for an autumn tour. They come to Stockholm in November. \n \nHighasakite\, Obaren\, Nov 15 \nPhoto: Stian Andersen

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Lykke Li
DESCRIPTION:When Lykke Li returned this summer\, possibly motivated by Sarah Klang’s challenge to her title as Sweden’s saddest popstar\, she made sure not to do things by half\, hence the title of her new album\, So Sad\, So Sexy. But while the sadness remained\, she’d updated her sound\, moving away from the old-school acoustic pop of her last album I Never Learn and side-project LIV to cold\, minimal hip-hop and R’n’B inspired beats. All that made for an album that’s 100% one of the year’s best\, and after a triumphant show in the rain at Way Out West\, she takes it to Stockholm in November. \n \nLykke Li\, Annexet\, Nov 10

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Margiela/ Hermès
DESCRIPTION:Artipelag’s autumn exhibition Margiela/ Hermès takes a look back at a notable time in fashion history\, and the collaboration between Belgian designer Martin Margiela and the historic fashion house Hermès. Between the years 1997 and 2003\, Margiela was given the task of creating women’s collections for the 200-year-old brand. This collaboration created fashion that went to places never explored before\, an avant-garde mix of Margiela’s adventurism and Hermès’ tradition and heritage. The exhibition opens in March\, having been originally put together by Margiela and Kaat Debo for ModeMuseum Antwerp. This Artipelag version presents Margiela’s own work in contrast with his Hermès creations. \nMargiela / Hermès\, Artipelag\, on display until Apr 28 \nPhoto: Left\, Anders Erdström\, Maison Martin Margiela A/W 1996-1997. SUMMARY:Christine And The Queens
DESCRIPTION:A few months ago\, we wondered exactly what Héloïse Letissier was up to. The superstar behind Franco-pop geniuses Christine and The Queens had only given a hint of an upcoming album (her first since 2016’s Chaleur Humaine\, originally released in France in 2014\, put her in the musical big leagues)\, a poster with the “-tine and the Queens” part of her title crossed out\, leaving only ‘Chris’\, and the line “girlfriend don’t feel like a girlfriend\, but lover damn I’ll be your lover”. A new song title and snippet of a lyric? Turns out it was a new album. Chris arrived in September\, and she comes to Stockholm in October. \n \nChristine And The Queens\, Nobelberget\, Oct 17  \nPhoto: Jamie Morgan

SUMMARY:Comedy Highlight: Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart
DESCRIPTION:In a year of weird news\, one of the more normal things to occur was the annoucement that comedy giants Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart were going on tour. Chappelle\, iconic from his mid 00s sketch show Chappelle’s Show\, had returned to the scene last year with four Netflix specials\, and was joined by the former The Daily Show host Stewart at a stand-up show in New York in August 2017. \nThis spring\, they announced some joint shows in the US\, and now they’re taking it international\, with Sweden on the itinerary for October. They’ll be at the Ericsson Globe in October. By the way\, the show is also no-phone\, so you’ll have to leave yours at home or in a sealed pouch for the show. So if you’re only going for the Instagram opportunity\, maybe don’t bother. \n \nJon Stewart & Dave Chappelle\, Ericsson Globe\, Oct 14 \nPhoto: Matthieu Bitton

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Ulla And Gustav Kraitz
DESCRIPTION:Since their first joint exhibition 53 years ago at Röhsska Museum\, Ulla and Gustav Kraitz have made their mark on the ceramics world. They’ve arranged over 100 exhibitions\, and their work can be found in many Swedish museums. They have gone in deep in their pursuit of excellence in their craft\, using Chinese ceramic techniques dating back to the Ming and Sung dynasties. It’s done by firing large pieces using a traditional Chinese wood oven\, built by Gustav himself. His work has become so well-known that students from China have travelled to Sweden to learn from him. Their exhibition at Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum starts on August 29. \nUlla and Gustav Kraitz\, Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum\, opening on August 29 \nPhoto: Per Axel Persson

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Hater
DESCRIPTION:Lykke Li is probably still at the top of the table for ‘making music that makes misery sound beautiful’\, but Hater have been running her hard over the past couple of years for the title. The four-piece are back with a new album\, Siesta\, this autumn\, and new single It’s So Easy is the first track out of the gates. In many ways\, it’s a vintage Hater song – pretty jangling guitars\, and a heartbruised sense of soul from Caroline Landahl’s pained-perfect vocal. They’ve added a little synth to the mix this time\, but importantly\, the freshening up doesn’t feel forced. Hater’s unique musical identity is what makes their music special\, and It’s So Easy is unmistakably a Hater song. Siesta arrives in late September\, and they play Debaser in October. \n \nHater\, Debaser Strand\, Oct 13 \nPhoto: Kamila Schneltser

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Many Voices Speak
DESCRIPTION:On her debut EP Away For All Time\, Many Voices Speak’s Matilda Mård showed herself to be a master of cinematic melancholy\, sadness rendered with touching grace and elegance. This talent culminated in her covering Blue Moon\, probably the ultimate example of the genre. She released her debut album Tank Town at the end of August\, having shown on the early singles Necessaries\, I Saw You and Chances an expanded musical range\, a sound that stretches to more styles and ideas than before. But what remains is her show-stopping voice and beautiful songwriter. She plays her first Stockholm show in a long time at Obaren in October. \n \nMany Voices Speak\, Obaren\, Oct 9 \nPhoto: Olof Grind

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Tory Lanez
DESCRIPTION:A Canadian rapper is coming to Stockholm and no\, it’s not Drake. It’s Tory Lanez. The 25-year-old first gained popularity with his 2014 mixtape\, Lost Cause and continued his rise with his debut album I Told You in 2016\, which reached as high as number two on some music charts. Lanez mixes his style between Rap and R&B consistently. On songs like Shooters and Hate To Say\, he displays his hip-hop skill\, and in Luv and Dance for Me\, he shows off his vocal ability. \nNow he’s on tour to support his second studio album\, MEMORIES DON’T DIE\, released in March of this year. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Desiigner
DESCRIPTION:With his hit song\, Panda featured on Kanye West’s album The Life of Pablo in 2016\, the career of Desiigner got off to a quick start. The aforementioned song reached number one on Billboard charts. At just 19\, he was among the most popular rappers in the industry. He released his first mixtape New English in June 2016. Desiigner has become known for his quick and mumble rapping style\, especially on Panda and another hit song\, Timmy Turner. \nHe released his first EP in May 2018\, L.O.D.  and will be going on tour to support the release of it\, coming to Stockholm at Debaser Strand on October 2. \n \nDesiigner\, October 2\, Debaser Strand

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Bloomsbury Spirit
DESCRIPTION:The Bloomsbury Group was a loose collective of artists\, writers and thinkers in early 20th century Britain who had gone to the same universities and socialised together in the same groups. What made them different to most upper class social circles of the time was that many of them went on to be the famous figures of the century\, including writer Virginia Woolf and economist John Maynard Keynes. Artipelag’s new exhibition Bloomsbury Spirit collects together the history of the group and explores the attitudes they shared that made so many of them revolutionary figures in the new century\, a group that sensed and adopted to many waves of modernism early and left their contemporaries trying to catch up. \nOn display between March 23 – September 30 \nPhoto: Roger Fry\, Clive Bell\, Duncan Grant\, Lytton Strachey\, Saxon Arnold Sydney-Turner and Vanessa Bell. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Per Svensson
DESCRIPTION:Artist and musician Per Svensson has close connections to Färgfabriken\, having worked with other artists in the rusty silos of the nearby Kolsyrefabriken for a number of years. Now he’s bringing his energies to Färgfabriken\, and his new exhibition aims to create an alchemic laboratory right in the gallery. With light and sound installations\, architectural pieces and art\, the idea is to create something that hovers on the edge of reality and magic\, a glimpse of another world.\nPer Svensson\, Färgfabriken\, Opens Sep 29 \nPhoto: Henrik Rylander

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Iceage
DESCRIPTION:Iceage have lived many lives since they emerged in 2011 as cold\, industrial brutalists on their debut album New Brigade. They expanded their stylistic range on the follow-up You’re Nothing\, and reinvented themselves as Nick Cave heirs and scribbled poetry dark romantics on their sweeping third album Plowing Into The Field Of Love. On their fourth record\, Beyondless\, released earlier this year\, the Danes have both consolidated their progress and stepped forward. The album mixes the force and violence of their early work with the cabaret glamour of Plowing\, with songwriting that stands out as their best yet. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Children Of The Children Of The Revolution
DESCRIPTION:1968 is still burnt bright into our collective memory\, as the year when workers and students united in France against capitalism and outdated institutions and through strikes and occupations brought the spirit of revolution back to life. Färgfabriken’s new exhibition has the events of that year on its mind\, fifty years later\, as it brings together artists who grew up in alternative\, idealistic homes of parents who wanted to create another way of living. That makes them The Children Of The Children Of The Revolution\, and they in some sense explore the same kind of questions that were floating around in 1968\, but in terms of our time. The artists are Signe Johannessen\, Joanna Lombard\, Lina Selander\, Ylva Snöfrid and Nikolina Ställborn. \nChildren Of The Children Of The Revolution\, Färgfabriken\, On display until Sep 19 \nPhoto: Ylva Snöfrid’s Transmutation Ritual with Mirrored Spring\, Snöfrid et les contre espaces\, in the group show “Retour sur Mulholland Drive\, at La Panacée\, Montpellier\, curated by Nicolas Bourriaud spring 2017. By Oliver Cablat

SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Soccer Mommy
DESCRIPTION:Soccer Mommy is another of the artists to emerge from the depths of Bandcamp with a guitar and an album’s worth of jangling indie pop. But what makes Sophie Allison stand out from her contemporaries\, who can sometimes lean too hard into messy-hair twee\, is a sense of real rawness. Take the opening line from Your Dog\, lead single from her most recent album Clean: “I don’t wanna be your fucking dog\, that you drag around”. Clean is Allison’s best outing to date\, the great leap forward in her songwriting. She comes to Melodybox in September with support from the UK’s Brooke Bentham. \n \nSoccer Mommy & Brooke Bentham\, Melodybox\, Sep 18

DESCRIPTION:Usually\, when an artist disappears from the solo scene for eight years\, it means their career is over. Although few artists are Sweden’s own José González. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Andy Warhol
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition about an exhibition\, such a very Warholian thing to do. Andy Warhol’s first solo exhibition at a museum was actually at Moderna Museet in 1968\, and this exhibition fifty years later looks back upon it\, both at the exhibition itself and at the reaction of the Swedish art world to the antics of the American pop artist. It also explores the status of Warhol’s work – was he a revolutionary or a superficial attention-seeking brat? – in the context of the year 1968 itself\, the year of revolutions and of course\, when Warhol himself was shot by Valerie Solanas. \nOn display until Feb 17\, Moderna Museet \nPhoto: Lasse Olsson (1968)

SUMMARY:Theatre Highlight: NEAR
DESCRIPTION:Jonatan Leandoer Håstad\, aka Yung Lean\, is spreading his creative wings even further this September. He’s bringing NEAR\, a collaboration with choreographer Eleanor Bauer and the Cullbergbaletten dance group to Drameten. So what is NEAR? The idea is that it’s a concert that bleeds into dance\, art and film. Yung Lean is onstage with 12 dancers from Cullbergbaletten\, for a performance that draws from both his older and newer music\, and his work with the visual artist and musician Frederik Valentin. Bauer\, who works in the interzone between dance\, art and film\, helms the piece and brings all the diverse elements together. It plays for two dates in September. \nNEAR\, Dramaten\, Sep 13-14 \nPhoto: Fredrik Andersson Andersson

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Art et Liberté
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition at Moderna Museet centres on Art et Liberté\, a group of Egyptian thinkers and surrealist artists who launched their collective with a manifesto entitled “Long Live Degenerate Art” in 1938. As a group of left-wing and anti-fascist theorists and artist\, the group was a petri-dish for new ideas and resistance to colonialism\, as well as the home for a new and unique language of surrealist art and literature. This exhibition features more than 200 artworks and documents\, and has already been on display at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K20 in Düsseldorf. SUMMARY:Gig Highlight: Julien Baker
DESCRIPTION:As someone who identifies both as queer and Christian\, and hailing from the musical heartland of Memphis Tennessee\, Julien Baker is often pitched as the voice of a new generation of musicians from the American South. But she wouldn’t have gotten to that position if she didn’t have songs\, and those she has in abundance across two albums\, 2015’s Sprained Ankle and 2017’s Turn Off The Lights. Baker makes a lot of little noise\, often relying just on her voice and a little guitar to write star-dappled songs that have hit listeners all over.
