DESCRIPTION:Peer Gynt is the enormous trickster and tragic figure of Norwegian drama\, pulled from a fairy tale by Henrik Ibsen and transformed into a larger-than-life rogue who struggles with himself and the weight of life as he journeys through a shape-shifting dreamworld. There’s enough depth and drama in this verse play that a director can steer it onto multiple paths\, so now we can see Michael Thalheimer’s take on it again when this production returns to Dramaten after its debut in 2018. DESCRIPTION:The period following the Second World War up until the 60s and 70s was marked by infrastructural thinking that aimed for innovation\, optimism and universality (something that feels very distant today\, as another 30 luxury apartments demand every public resource within range of them be shut\, like a spray of pesticide on the surrounding area). The humble concrete panel is what fuelled a lot of that optimistic thinking\, allowing for rapid rebuilding following the war\, as well as the construction of homes that lifted millions out of tenements and slums. DESCRIPTION:Chromatics’ long-awaiting new album Dear Tommy has almost achieved mythical status at this point. Originally announced way back in 2014\, the first singles came out in 2015\, and then everything disappeared into the ether. Eventually\, the story came out – after a near-death experience\, band mastermind Johnny Jewel destroyed all existing versions of the record\, including thousands of already-printed vinyls and CDs\, and decided to re-record the whole thing. DESCRIPTION:One of the best pieces of news to pop up at the start of 2019 was the return of Gothenburg band Westkust\, who kicked the year off with Swebeach\, a rocket-powered blast of melodic shoegaze. It was the first piece of new music we had heard from the band since their 2015 debut album Last Forever\, and many thought the band had called it a day. Re-energised and re-organised with a new line-up however\, they’re back with a new album\, called simply Westkust\, which landed in March and confirmed that the band still had everything that made them great. But the dirtbag rock troupe\, who play and write with a sense of theatrical self-awareness and satirical winking\, have become Pitchfork favourites\, and proved themselves on international stages with their tours over the past year.
