SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Andy Warhol
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition about an exhibition\, such a very Warholian thing to do. Andy Warhol’s first solo exhibition at a museum was actually at Moderna Museet in 1968\, and this exhibition fifty years later looks back upon it\, both at the exhibition itself and at the reaction of the Swedish art world to the antics of the American pop artist. It also explores the status of Warhol’s work – was he a revolutionary or a superficial attention-seeking brat? – in the context of the year 1968 itself\, the year of revolutions and of course\, when Warhol himself was shot by Valerie Solanas. \nOn display until Feb 17\, Moderna Museet \nPhoto: Lasse Olsson (1968)

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Art et Liberté
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition at Moderna Museet centres on Art et Liberté\, a group of Egyptian thinkers and surrealist artists who launched their collective with a manifesto entitled “Long Live Degenerate Art” in 1938. As a group of left-wing and anti-fascist theorists and artist\, the group was a petri-dish for new ideas and resistance to colonialism\, as well as the home for a new and unique language of surrealist art and literature. This exhibition features more than 200 artworks and documents\, and has already been on display at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K20 in Düsseldorf. It opens in Stockholm in April. \nArt et Liberté: Rupture\, War and Surrealism in Egypt 1938-48. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Mother Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Photography is a tool\, albeit a subjective one\, with which we can document our everyday lives and the interesting moments that happen throughout it. Two people who have documented their lives are the late Linda McCartney and her daughter Mary. Linda became the first person to both be photographed for and to have taken a photograph for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. While Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning monarch in history in 2015\, it was Mary who took the official portrait. \nThe photographs at the Mother Daughter exhibition at Fotografiska take you on a journey that spans three decades and includes family moments\, interactions with icons like Jimi Hendrix\, Mick Jagger\, Kate Moss and Rihanna\, and adventures through the everyday lives of the McCartneys capturing moments of intimacy and mystery behind the photos. \nMother Daughter\, Fotografiska\, On display until September 2 \nPhoto: Mary McCartney

SUMMARY:Art Highlight: The World Of Peter Dahl
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition takes a look at one of the most renowned painters in the Swedish art world. Born in Norway before moving to Sweden as a child\, Peter Dahl worked across eight decades\, from the chaos of the post-war years to his (probable) last painting\, a triple self-portrait in 2016. Dahl’s work covers a wide range\, from scenes from bars and normal life to adventures in strangeness. “My subject matter hasn’t really changed since my teens”\, he has said in a past interview\, “They are baroque scenes and living room scenes”. This exhibition\, curated by his son Christoffer\, opens a door into the artist’s world. \nThe world of Peter Dahl\, Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum\, On display May 4–August 19 \nImage: Peter-Dahl\, Tåg i himlen\, 1998 oil on canvas. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Alexander Lervik
DESCRIPTION:The designer Alexander Lervik graduated from Beckmans School Of Design in 1998\, and the twentieth anniversary of that event has convinced Kulturhuset that it’s time for a retrospective. The designer has had a career that has seen him create products that blend striking form with usability\, or as the exhibition text puts it\, that “can be a talking point at Milan design fairs while also having a function”. This exhibition looks back on his most celebrated work\, as well as exploring his personal narrative and the life stories that influence his pieces. \nI huvudet på Alexander Lervik\, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern\, On display between April 6 – June 17 \nPhoto: © Alexander Lervik\, Designer

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Alexander Klingspor
DESCRIPTION:Born in Stockholm in 1977\, Alexander Klingspor chose to skip a Swedish art education and instead do his learning in America. Inspired by Renaissance\, baroque and 1800’s realism\, he went to study realistic art and illustration under Mark English in Missouri. Now living in New York\, Klingspor turned that education in realism into a tool to create heavy\, hallucinogenic surrealistic works\, subjects depicted in rich detail but with reality oddly bent around them. Klingspor exhibits regularly in the US and UK\, and now Sweden has a chance to see his works with Resenär\, his new exhibition at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde. \n“A life lived with one foot in the past and the other in the now is a life of questioning things. As an artist\, studying western art and its history is a reminder of how certain things remain the same. Happiness\, beauty\, desire\, vanity\, greed\, etc\, run like a red thread though all the ages\, as far as we can see. The time we live in is no exception. Resenär is a self-study in existential search through painting\, and a desire\, a pursuit\, after a meaningful relation to our world in a time of materialistic wealth and over-consumption”\, said Klingspor about the exhibition. \nWaldemarsudde’s Karin Sidén says “For an art institution like Waldemarsudde it’s a challenge to exhibit Klingspor’s work\, which opens up interesting reflections and conversations about the chosen art\, about figurative painting\, our time’s surrealism and the art scenes and art markets in the USA and in Sweden”. The exhibition will be accompanied by articles from the art historian Peter Trippi\, culture writer Ida Therén\, Sidén and Klingspor himself. \nAlexander Klingspor\, Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde\, On display until May 27

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Red Love
DESCRIPTION:Alexandra Kollontai was one of the extraordinary figures who existed in the heat of the Russian Revolution\, graduating from revolutionary to member of the Soviet government and was even the Soviet ambassador to Sweden for a while. She was also a prominent feminist writer and proponent of new ideas of the family and free love. She wrote a novel about love during the Russian Revolution in 1923\, and that novel\, Red Love\, is the inspiration for this exhibition of the same name. Dora García’s exhibition for Tensta Konsthall explores Kollontai’s ideas and the very theme of love in uncertain times. \nDora García: Red Love\, Tensta Konsthall\, On display until September 23

SUMMARY:Art Highlight: Jens Fänge
DESCRIPTION:Born in Gothenburg in 1965\, the work of Jens Fänge has earned him acclaim and exhibitions at many of Sweden’s premier galleries and museums\, including Moderna Museet and Götebörgs Konstmuseet\, as well as abroad. This new exhibition at Bonniers Konsthall collects some of his work from the past few years\, as well as new pieces created especially for the exhibition. Drömmarna (The Dreams) is his largest ever exhibition\, his bright and patterned paintings arranged in such a way to create a sense of immersion into their world. It’s on display until April. \nJens Fänge: Drömmarna\, Bonniers Konsthall\, on display until Apr 1 \nPhoto: Den nya andans gift\, 2009\, Oil On Canvas. Photo: Galleri Magnus Karlsson

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Fria Fotografers Filial
DESCRIPTION:Fria Fotografers Filial was initially born at Kulturhuset in 2016 after an idea by their then Art/ Design and Fashion head Karina Ericsson Wärn: “In the 1980s I ran Gauss Fotografiskt Galleri together with some friends. We showed exhibitions with photographers who are now unbelievably big names\, but we were most of all interested in strong stories\, regardless of who was behind the camera. It was to give everyone a chance that we launched Fria fotografers filial\, an exhibition without barriers\, that we want to be open for all. One can see it as a democracy project”. The exhibition accepts submissions from the general public\, and collects the work of over 100 photographers\, from experienced pros to people picking up a camera for the first time. \nFria Fotografers Filial\, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern\, on display until April 22 \nPhoto: Clockwise from top left\, Helena Ahnberg\, Lovisa Wanker\, Elisabeth Ingvar\, Nikola Stankovic\, Per-Erik Åström\, Roberto Ekholm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: The Image Of War At Bonniers Konsthall
DESCRIPTION:War (unh\, yeah)\, what is it good for? Well\, exhibitions at art galleries apparently. Bonniers Konsthall’s current exhibition\, ‘The Image Of War’\, is a collection of works from artists dealing with the depictions of conflict\, how they’re fed to us and what we take from them. For those of us who live safe and far away from conflict zones\, images are how we experience war\, but are often shown to us as projects of propaganda as much as they are to inform. Here\, the artists (including Lawrence Abu Hamdan\, David Claerbout and Iman Issa) confront that world of war imagery\, and examine how we should better understand what these images are telling\, or trying to tell\, us. \nThe Image Of War is on display until Jan 14. \n  \nPhoto: The Image Of War. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: New Eelam
DESCRIPTION:Artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas’ New Eelam project is one that aims to open up questions about how and where we live. Kulendran Thomas ponders ideas of citizenship: the name New Eelam comes from the Tamil name for Sri Lanka\, and the Tamils’ attempt to establish a new state\, Tamil Eelam\, which failed when they were defeated in Sri Lankan civil war. That made Kulendran Thomas think about citizenship: is there a future where that idea is detached from enclosure within national borders? The project\, which takes the form in this exhibition of a concept room at Tensta Konsthall\, also tries to examine the living spaces of the future. Could we imagine a system of homes\, and living spaces\, flexible and flowing\, but removed from the deprivations of the private market\, a kind of luxury communism approach to housing? It’s hard to capture the scope of it in a few words\, so you’ll have to get to Tensta to explore it for yourself. \nTensta Konsthall\, On display until Jan 14 \nPhoto: Jean Baptiste Beranger

SUMMARY:Highlights: Linnéa Sjöberg
DESCRIPTION:Linnéa Sjöberg is a Swedish artist that works between Stockholm and Berlin\, and her exhibition Jag har spytt tusen år av ord (I have vomited a thousand years of words) is a dizzying tsunami-wave of ideas and experiences. One of her works\, ‘German Wave’\, is based on her explorations in the archive of German TV channel Deutsche Welle\, and interrogates how live TV broadcasts stamp their way into our memory: for example\, would 9/11 be burned so vividly into our collective consciousness if it had happened before the live broadcast era? That and other works are on display as part of the exhibition\, at Belenius until December 22.
