SUMMARY:Exhibition Highligt: Fornasetti
DESCRIPTION:The Italian artist and designer Piero Fornasetti was known for the many arrows in his quiver – his career took him everywhere from paintings to furniture design. After spending the Second World War in exile in Switzerland\, he returned to Milan and started his collaboration with Giò Pontis\, where Pontis’ designed furniture which Fornasetti decorated. Fornasetti later continued to design\, with his wall-plates featuring the face of the opera star Lina Cavalieri (from the series Tema e Variazioni) perhaps some of his most famous works. He also painted and drew throughout his life. This exhibition at Artipelag takes on the difficult task of trying to pack as much Fornasetti as possible into a single room. \nFORNASETTI: Inside Out Outside In\, Artipelag\, opens Jun 14 \nPiero Fornasetti. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Anna Daučíková
DESCRIPTION:The artist Anna Daučíková has led a career that’s gone from glass-blowing to founding radical journals to being professor of art at the Prague Academy\, as well as being a former member of the Soviet Artists’ Union and spokesperson for LGBT rights in Slovakia. This exhibition\, On Allomorphing\, is an exploration about psychological and physical malleability\, and the title comes from the linguistic term Allomorph\, “when a unit of meaning varies in sound without changing the meaning”. \nOn Allomorphing\, Tensta Konsthall\, on display until Sep 22 \nPhoto: Still from On Allomorphing\, Anna Daučíková\, 2017

SUMMARY:Art Highlight: Transformationer
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve been to Nationalmuseet recently\, you’ve probably seen their collection of art from the Swedish and international achieves dating back from the 1500s. But what if you could get a little deeper what’s going on in the photos? That’s the aim of the museum’s collaboration with Stadsteatern\, Transformationer\, where actors will help assist in bringing four works from the museum’s collection to life\, and exploring the body ideals\, poses and hierarchies they contain. Somewhere between a performance and a tour of the museum’s collection\, it runs in April and May. \nTransformationer\, Nationalmuseet\, opens Apr 23 \nImage: Martin van Meytens\, Sackska family painting\, 1730 – 1731\, Oil on canvas.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Framtiden Börjar Här
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition at ArkDes\, imported from the V&A in London\, the idea is to look towards the future without the sense of doom we usually do. It features 80 innovations of the far and near future\, looking at how technology might respond to the challenges and voids of our time. Examples include cryo-preservation\, wearable tech and more. The exhibition also explores the ethical questions behind these technologies – is the way they will change the world really for the better? When certain possibilities open up\, should we hesitate about taking them? As the exhibition text says\, “it is up to us to create the future we want”. \nFramtiden Börjar Här\, ArkDes\, on display until Aug 4 \nPhoto: Cryotherapy Kit\, Photo by Johan Dehlin

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Sharon Hayes
DESCRIPTION:The American activist and artist Sharon Hayes made her breakthrough back in the 90s with her performance tour ‘Lesbian Love Tour’\, where she visited 45 lesbian living rooms across the US. Since then she’s made a career from her dynamic and innovative works\, taking the intimate and performing it on improvised and public stages\, like her piece Everything Else Has Failed! Don’t You Think It’s Time for Love?\, which saw her perform love letters outside a bank in New York. This exhibition at Moderna Museet features performances\, video pieces and photography. \nSharon Hayes\, Moderna Museet\, opens Apr 13 \nPhoto: Courtesy of the artist and Tanya Leighton Gallery\, Berlin © Sharon Hayes

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Here’s Looking At You
DESCRIPTION:Here’s an exhibition that’s obligatory for the photographer nerds. The Hasselblad Foundation’s collection provides the source material for Sven Harry’s new exhibition Here’s Looking At You\, curated by the cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (known for his work on films like Her\, Interstellar\, Spectre). The exhibition’s main obsession is the intimacy of eye contact\, as the photographs’ subjects stare down the camera and out at the viewer. “When the museum was granted access to the Hasselblad Foundation’s unique collection of photographs\, we asked ourselves how we could best create a unique show and a whole new way to experience photography”\, says Dragana Kusoffsky Maksimović\, CEO of Sven-Harry’s. “We realised that what we were looking for was a curator who could interpret the collection in a completely new and exciting way. With this in mind\, choosing Hoyte van Hoytema\, a brilliant cinematographer\, felt just right and we’re very happy about and grateful for his participation and contribution to the exhibition. It has been fascinating to see what happens when a cinematographer curates an exhibition of stills”. \nHere’s Looking At You\, Sven Harry’s Art Museum\, on display until May 19 \nPhoto: Elina Brotherus\, Le Nez de Monsieur Cheval\, 1999\, from the series Suites françaises

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Expressionist Masterpieces
DESCRIPTION:Early twentieth-century Germany was the home of expressionism\, and this exhibition at Millesgården brings a sample of that output to Stockholm\, courtesy of a loan from the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Swittzerland and the Osthaus-Museum Hagen collection in Germany. It features over 150 works produced between 1905 and 1938 from artists including Emil Nolde\, Otto Mueller and Max Pechstein and groups like Der Blaue Reiter and Die Brücke. Europe’s post-industrial flux was reflected in the art produced by these groups – you’ll have the chance to explore them this spring and summer. \nExpressionistiska Mästerverk\, Millesgården\, on display until June 9 \nPhoto: Max Pechstein\, Lying Girl\, 1910\, Pechstein Hamburg Tökendorf

DESCRIPTION:Theatre and dramatic art\, and the delicate\, intricate costumes and stage set-ups at its heart\, were an important part of historical Chinese\, Japanese and Tibetan culture\, used to explain founding myths and tell stories of history. This exhibition\, Ghosts\, Generals and Goddesses at Dansmuseet\, displays a number of these precious items from the collections of the museum’s founder Rolf de Maré\, acquired during his trips to Asia. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Dora Garcia
DESCRIPTION:French TV\, 1978 – Jacques Lacan is asked a question and responds: “I always tell the truth\, but not all of the truth”. That quote provides the title for the artist Dora Garcia’s new exhibition (I Always Tell The Truth) at Bonniers Konsthall\, and also for a text which will be included in the exhibition. Also included are film clips\, drawings and performances\, exploring the idea of truth and information in the age of fake news. The exhibition also includes her new film Segunda Vez\, which looks at the work of Argentinian writer Oscar Masotta. \nDora Garcia\, Bonniers Konsthall\, on display until Feb 17 \nPhoto: Still from Segunda Vez. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Anja Niemi
DESCRIPTION:The Norwegian artist Anja Niemi specialises in what are dubbed “tableaux-vivants”\, photos that relyi on the painstaking construction of a landscape of detail that creates the impression of a whole story or event wrapped in one photo. Niemi says: “When I was younger I always had many ideas\, but no coherent way to express them. That I was dyslexic and had anxiety was a big obstacle. When I discovered photography I began to realise that I could tell stories without words\, and translate the ideas in my head to something tangible”. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Kosmism
DESCRIPTION:Anton Vidokle is an artist with an impressive CV\, having founded the digital publishing platform e-flux way back in the early days of the internet in 1998. This new exhibition at Tensta Konsthall features three of his films that investigate the concept of Russian Cosmism\, an early 20th century philosophical movement that took in a wide range of ideas and later influenced early Soviet cultural institutions. The films\, under the title Immortality for All: A Film Trilogy on Russian Cosmism\, will be shown along with sculptures by Arseny Zhilayev inspired by searches through Soviet museum archives. \nKosmism\, Tensta Konsthall\, on display until Jan 20 2019 \nPhoto: From Anton Vidokle’s film This is Cosmos

SUMMARY:Public Luxury
DESCRIPTION:After a brief closure for renovations between March and May\, ArkDes returns in June with the exhibition Public Luxury. Featuring the work of architects and designers\, the exhibition focuses on experimental work that asks how architecture interacts with and makes possible our society. The goal here is to spark debate and search for solutions to the big challenges faced by Swedish society. How can we create architecture that not only meets basic needs\, but also goes beyond that and makes ‘the good society’ possible? With contributions from Dansbana!\, Jonas Dahlberg\, Johan Celsing and more\, this exhibition aims to find out. \nPublic Luxury\, ArkDes\, on display from Jun 1 \nPhoto: Jonas Dahlberg Studio

DESCRIPTION:Artipelag’s autumn exhibition Margiela/ Hermès takes a look back at a notable time in fashion history\, and the collaboration between Belgian designer Martin Margiela and the historic fashion house Hermès. Between the years 1997 and 2003\, Margiela was given the task of creating women’s collections for the 200-year-old brand. This collaboration created fashion that went to places never explored before\, an avant-garde mix of Margiela’s adventurism and Hermès’ tradition and heritage. The exhibition opens in March\, having been originally put together by Margiela and Kaat Debo for ModeMuseum Antwerp. This Artipelag version presents Margiela’s own work in contrast with his Hermès creations. \nMargiela / Hermès\, Artipelag\, on display until Apr 28 \nPhoto: Left\, Anders Erdström\, Maison Martin Margiela A/W 1996-1997. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Ulla And Gustav Kraitz
DESCRIPTION:Since their first joint exhibition 53 years ago at Röhsska Museum\, Ulla and Gustav Kraitz have made their mark on the ceramics world. They’ve arranged over 100 exhibitions\, and their work can be found in many Swedish museums. They have gone in deep in their pursuit of excellence in their craft\, using Chinese ceramic techniques dating back to the Ming and Sung dynasties. It’s done by firing large pieces using a traditional Chinese wood oven\, built by Gustav himself. His work has become so well-known that students from China have travelled to Sweden to learn from him. Their exhibition at Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum starts on August 29. \nUlla and Gustav Kraitz\, Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum\, opening on August 29 \nPhoto: Per Axel Persson

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Bloomsbury Spirit
DESCRIPTION:The Bloomsbury Group was a loose collective of artists\, writers and thinkers in early 20th century Britain who had gone to the same universities and socialised together in the same groups. What made them different to most upper class social circles of the time was that many of them went on to be the famous figures of the century\, including writer Virginia Woolf and economist John Maynard Keynes. Artipelag’s new exhibition Bloomsbury Spirit collects together the history of the group and explores the attitudes they shared that made so many of them revolutionary figures in the new century\, a group that sensed and adopted to many waves of modernism early and left their contemporaries trying to catch up. \nOn display between March 23 – September 30 \nPhoto: Roger Fry\, Clive Bell\, Duncan Grant\, Lytton Strachey\, Saxon Arnold Sydney-Turner and Vanessa Bell. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Per Svensson
DESCRIPTION:Artist and musician Per Svensson has close connections to Färgfabriken\, having worked with other artists in the rusty silos of the nearby Kolsyrefabriken for a number of years. Now he’s bringing his energies to Färgfabriken\, and his new exhibition aims to create an alchemic laboratory right in the gallery. With light and sound installations\, architectural pieces and art\, the idea is to create something that hovers on the edge of reality and magic\, a glimpse of another world.\nPer Svensson\, Färgfabriken\, Opens Sep 29 \nPhoto: Henrik Rylander

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Children Of The Children Of The Revolution
DESCRIPTION:1968 is still burnt bright into our collective memory\, as the year when workers and students united in France against capitalism and outdated institutions and through strikes and occupations brought the spirit of revolution back to life. Färgfabriken’s new exhibition has the events of that year on its mind\, fifty years later\, as it brings together artists who grew up in alternative\, idealistic homes of parents who wanted to create another way of living. That makes them The Children Of The Children Of The Revolution\, and they in some sense explore the same kind of questions that were floating around in 1968\, but in terms of our time. The artists are Signe Johannessen\, Joanna Lombard\, Lina Selander\, Ylva Snöfrid and Nikolina Ställborn. \nChildren Of The Children Of The Revolution\, Färgfabriken\, On display until Sep 19 \nPhoto: Ylva Snöfrid’s Transmutation Ritual with Mirrored Spring\, Snöfrid et les contre espaces\, in the group show “Retour sur Mulholland Drive\, at La Panacée\, Montpellier\, curated by Nicolas Bourriaud spring 2017. By Oliver Cablat

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Andy Warhol
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition about an exhibition\, such a very Warholian thing to do. Andy Warhol’s first solo exhibition at a museum was actually at Moderna Museet in 1968\, and this exhibition fifty years later looks back upon it\, both at the exhibition itself and at the reaction of the Swedish art world to the antics of the American pop artist. It also explores the status of Warhol’s work – was he a revolutionary or a superficial attention-seeking brat? – in the context of the year 1968 itself\, the year of revolutions and of course\, when Warhol himself was shot by Valerie Solanas. \nOn display until Feb 17\, Moderna Museet \nPhoto: Lasse Olsson (1968)

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Art et Liberté
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition at Moderna Museet centres on Art et Liberté\, a group of Egyptian thinkers and surrealist artists who launched their collective with a manifesto entitled “Long Live Degenerate Art” in 1938. As a group of left-wing and anti-fascist theorists and artist\, the group was a petri-dish for new ideas and resistance to colonialism\, as well as the home for a new and unique language of surrealist art and literature. This exhibition features more than 200 artworks and documents\, and has already been on display at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K20 in Düsseldorf. It opens in Stockholm in April. \nArt et Liberté: Rupture\, War and Surrealism in Egypt 1938-48. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Mother Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Photography is a tool\, albeit a subjective one\, with which we can document our everyday lives and the interesting moments that happen throughout it. Two people who have documented their lives are the late Linda McCartney and her daughter Mary. Linda became the first person to both be photographed for and to have taken a photograph for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. While Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning monarch in history in 2015\, it was Mary who took the official portrait. \nThe photographs at the Mother Daughter exhibition at Fotografiska take you on a journey that spans three decades and includes family moments\, interactions with icons like Jimi Hendrix\, Mick Jagger\, Kate Moss and Rihanna\, and adventures through the everyday lives of the McCartneys capturing moments of intimacy and mystery behind the photos. \nMother Daughter\, Fotografiska\, On display until September 2 \nPhoto: Mary McCartney

SUMMARY:Art Highlight: The World Of Peter Dahl
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition takes a look at one of the most renowned painters in the Swedish art world. Born in Norway before moving to Sweden as a child\, Peter Dahl worked across eight decades\, from the chaos of the post-war years to his (probable) last painting\, a triple self-portrait in 2016. Dahl’s work covers a wide range\, from scenes from bars and normal life to adventures in strangeness. “My subject matter hasn’t really changed since my teens”\, he has said in a past interview\, “They are baroque scenes and living room scenes”. This exhibition\, curated by his son Christoffer\, opens a door into the artist’s world. \nThe world of Peter Dahl\, Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum\, On display May 4–August 19 \nImage: Peter-Dahl\, Tåg i himlen\, 1998 oil on canvas. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Alexander Lervik
DESCRIPTION:The designer Alexander Lervik graduated from Beckmans School Of Design in 1998\, and the twentieth anniversary of that event has convinced Kulturhuset that it’s time for a retrospective. The designer has had a career that has seen him create products that blend striking form with usability\, or as the exhibition text puts it\, that “can be a talking point at Milan design fairs while also having a function”. This exhibition looks back on his most celebrated work\, as well as exploring his personal narrative and the life stories that influence his pieces. \nI huvudet på Alexander Lervik\, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern\, On display between April 6 – June 17 \nPhoto: © Alexander Lervik\, Designer

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Alexander Klingspor
DESCRIPTION:Born in Stockholm in 1977\, Alexander Klingspor chose to skip a Swedish art education and instead do his learning in America. Inspired by Renaissance\, baroque and 1800’s realism\, he went to study realistic art and illustration under Mark English in Missouri. Now living in New York\, Klingspor turned that education in realism into a tool to create heavy\, hallucinogenic surrealistic works\, subjects depicted in rich detail but with reality oddly bent around them. Klingspor exhibits regularly in the US and UK\, and now Sweden has a chance to see his works with Resenär\, his new exhibition at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde. \n“A life lived with one foot in the past and the other in the now is a life of questioning things. As an artist\, studying western art and its history is a reminder of how certain things remain the same. Happiness\, beauty\, desire\, vanity\, greed\, etc\, run like a red thread though all the ages\, as far as we can see. The time we live in is no exception. Resenär is a self-study in existential search through painting\, and a desire\, a pursuit\, after a meaningful relation to our world in a time of materialistic wealth and over-consumption”\, said Klingspor about the exhibition. \nWaldemarsudde’s Karin Sidén says “For an art institution like Waldemarsudde it’s a challenge to exhibit Klingspor’s work\, which opens up interesting reflections and conversations about the chosen art\, about figurative painting\, our time’s surrealism and the art scenes and art markets in the USA and in Sweden”. The exhibition will be accompanied by articles from the art historian Peter Trippi\, culture writer Ida Therén\, Sidén and Klingspor himself. \nAlexander Klingspor\, Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde\, On display until May 27

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Red Love
DESCRIPTION:Alexandra Kollontai was one of the extraordinary figures who existed in the heat of the Russian Revolution\, graduating from revolutionary to member of the Soviet government and was even the Soviet ambassador to Sweden for a while. She was also a prominent feminist writer and proponent of new ideas of the family and free love. She wrote a novel about love during the Russian Revolution in 1923\, and that novel\, Red Love\, is the inspiration for this exhibition of the same name. Dora García’s exhibition for Tensta Konsthall explores Kollontai’s ideas and the very theme of love in uncertain times. \nDora García: Red Love\, Tensta Konsthall\, On display until September 23

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Fria Fotografers Filial
DESCRIPTION:Fria Fotografers Filial was initially born at Kulturhuset in 2016 after an idea by their then Art/ Design and Fashion head Karina Ericsson Wärn: “In the 1980s I ran Gauss Fotografiskt Galleri together with some friends. We showed exhibitions with photographers who are now unbelievably big names\, but we were most of all interested in strong stories\, regardless of who was behind the camera. It was to give everyone a chance that we launched Fria fotografers filial\, an exhibition without barriers\, that we want to be open for all. One can see it as a democracy project”. The exhibition accepts submissions from the general public\, and collects the work of over 100 photographers\, from experienced pros to people picking up a camera for the first time. \nFria Fotografers Filial\, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern\, on display until April 22 \nPhoto: Clockwise from top left\, Helena Ahnberg\, Lovisa Wanker\, Elisabeth Ingvar\, Nikola Stankovic\, Per-Erik Åström\, Roberto Ekholm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: The Image Of War At Bonniers Konsthall
DESCRIPTION:War (unh\, yeah)\, what is it good for? Well\, exhibitions at art galleries apparently. Bonniers Konsthall’s current exhibition\, ‘The Image Of War’\, is a collection of works from artists dealing with the depictions of conflict\, how they’re fed to us and what we take from them. For those of us who live safe and far away from conflict zones\, images are how we experience war\, but are often shown to us as projects of propaganda as much as they are to inform. Here\, the artists (including Lawrence Abu Hamdan\, David Claerbout and Iman Issa) confront that world of war imagery\, and examine how we should better understand what these images are telling\, or trying to tell\, us. \nThe Image Of War is on display until Jan 14. \n  \nPhoto: The Image Of War.
