SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Signature Women
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Mamma Andersson\, About a girl\, 2005 \n  \nOriginally due to open to coincide with International Women’s Day back in March\, this exhibition may have been delayed by corona but that doesn’t diminish its value. With Artipelag finally back open\, Signature Women can now fulfil the job it was supposed to – showcasing 100 years of female Swedish art. The work featured here covers many different artistic fields\, and both famous and lesser-known artists\, and aims to shine a light on the story of female artists in Sweden from the beginning of the 1900s. \nSignature Women\, Artipelag\, on display until Sep 27

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Kiruna Forever
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Gregor Kallina \nOne of the downsides of mining is that it can make a big hole. And things can then fall into that hole. To stop that being the fate of Kiruna\, Sweden’s northernmost city\, they’re moving the town by three kilometres\, which means that about a third of the people and buildings have to move. This exhibition at ArkDes tracks this extraordinary event\, talking to architects\, urban planners and artists about the move\, and about Kiruna’s history and future. Paying a visit will let you see some incredible images\, including whole buildings on the move. \nKiruna Forever\, ArkDes\, on display until Feb 2021

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Art in Fashion
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Johan Eldrot \n  \nSven-Harrys re-opened in June\, which means Stockholmers get another chance to catch up with their current exhibition. Now extended to September after its initial February-May run time was disrupted by corona\, Art In Fashion is the baby of fashion expert and trend analyst Cay Bond\, who has brought together the works of 14 designers\, both Swedish and international\, whose work is clearly influenced by the world of art. It’s a tribute to the avant garde\, of both the fashion and art worlds. \nArt In Fashion\, Sven Harrys Konstmuseum\, on display until Sep 27

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Pär Engsheden and Sara Danius’ Nobel Gowns
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Carl Bengtsson/Skarp Agent \n  \nLast year\, Sweden tragically lost the writer and professor Sara Danius to cancer. A big part of Danius’ visual presence in the public mind was the dresses she wore to Nobel Gala ceremonies\, and that’s what this exhibition at Nationalmuseum takes in. It focuses on the interaction between designer Pär Engsheden and Danius in the creation of the dresses\, and goes deep into the question of how fashion and other arts interact. Engsheden\, who currently runs the fashion department at Beckmans Design School\, has put together the exhibition with Danius’ family. \nNobelklänningar\, Nationalmuseum\, on display until Feb 2021

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Stilla Skönhet
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Einar Jolin\, Interior\, 1913. Oil on Canvas\, 45\,5 x 38 cm. Photo: Prallan Allsten/ Moderna museet \n  \nThis exhibition is about cultural exchange\, specifically that between Sweden and Scandinavia and Japan. As information about Japanese culture started to filter into the West in a major way with the rise of mass media in the 20th century\, artists began to become inspired by the new styles they were exposed to\, particularly the simple and meditative aesthetic of Japanese design. Stilla skönhet collects paintings\, sculptures\, design pieces and more from Japanese\, Swedish and Finnish artists that allows the viewer to trace the inspiration lines that run between them. \nStilla skönhet\, Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde\, on display until Aug 16

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Éva Mag
DESCRIPTION:The material for this exhibition at Bonners Konsthall originates from Éva Mag’s father’s collection of old items abandoned by their owners\, which he keeps on his lot outside of Stockholm. Mag has brought old machines\, motors and other bits and pieces from that collection into the art hall\, where she and others take turns to organise and process them\, working their way through the stories of the years of time that produced the objects. The exhibition also features Mag’s video work Dead Matter Moves\, a choreographed examination of collective work and strength. \nÉva Mag: There is a Plan For This\, Bonniers Konsthall\, on display until Jun 14

SUMMARY:Exhibition highlight: Weird Sensation Feels Good
DESCRIPTION:There are a lot of things that symbolise the gap between generations\, and right now ASMR is one of the biggest. Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response is something you probably won’t have heard of if you’re over 30\, but the genre\, primarily consisting of YouTube videos of tapping\, whispering\, scratching and other strange\, soft noises designed to provoke ‘sensory’ responses is huge amongst teenagers. This exhibition at ArkDes dives deep in to explore one of the modern age’s most curious phenomena. The museum is currently closed due to the corona shutdown\, but you can experience the exhibition virtually and through talks and tours via various means on Arkdes’ website. \nWeird Sensation Feels Good\, ArkDes\, on display until Nov 1

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Gustaf Tenggren
DESCRIPTION:You probably didn’t know\, or at least I didn’t know\, that a guy from Gothenburg was Walt Disney’s art director. But that’s exactly the journey Gustaf Tenggren took. Growing up as one of six in the little village of Magra by Alingsås\, he later studied in Gothenburg where one of his clients was Stora Teatern. After emigrating to the US\, he came to the attention of Disney\, who brought him in to work on the posters and visuals around films in the 1930s. This exhibition at Millesgården collects work from Tenggren’s life over a 60-year span\, including some of his most celebrated children’s books. \nGustaf Tenggren\, Millesgården\, on display until May 31 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Inspiration
DESCRIPTION:The classic and the contemporary meet in this new exhibition at Nationalmuseum. The concept is pretty simple – classical works of art from the past obviously filter through and inspire modern artists. So why not collect contemporary works from all disciplines and parts of the world and see exactly how those classical pieces have been digested by and inspired today’s artists? The exhibition also includes the classics from Nationalmuseum’s collection to see how they interact with the contemporary works.\nInspiration – Iconic Works\, Nationalmuseum\, opens Feb 20 \nPhoto: Yinka Shonibare\, Medusa West © Yinka Shonibare CBE. SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Maria Bonnier Dahlins Foundation
DESCRIPTION:The Maria Bonnier Dahlins Foundation was started in 1985 by Jeanette Bonnier in memory of her daughter Maria\, who tragically passed away in a car accident. The foundation aims to support and promote young artists\, and their annual grant this year has gone to Olof Marsja and Iris Smeds\, whose work is also coming to the gallery in this exhibition. Marsja and Smeds’ work covers everything from crafts to performance art\, and opens on December 4. \nMaria Bonnier Dahlins Foundation Exhibition\, Bonniers Konsthall\, opens Dec 4 \nPhoto: Iris Smeds\, Film still from The Average (2018)

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Pentti Sammallahti - Distant Lands
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition\, Distant Lands\, posits that Western materialism suffers from a lack of space for mystique\, the things in life that seem to exist outside of the hard concrete of that we understand. So as a remedy it provides the work of Finnish photographer\, poet and artist Pentti Sammallahti. Sammallahti has a talent for capture the nature’s seemingly supernatural power and force\, his photographs taking us inside the worlds of wild spaces. “These kinds of powerful artworks remind us of the mystery of existence”\, says the exhibition’s producer Emilie Ackerman. \nPentti Sammallahti – Distant Land\, Fotografiska\, on display until Mar 3 \nPhoto: Helsinki Suomi\, 1982 © Pentti Sammallahti

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Flying Panels
DESCRIPTION:The period following the Second World War up until the 60s and 70s was marked by infrastructural thinking that aimed for innovation\, optimism and universality (something that feels very distant today\, as another 30 luxury apartments demand every public resource within range of them be shut\, like a spray of pesticide on the surrounding area). The humble concrete panel is what fuelled a lot of that optimistic thinking\, allowing for rapid rebuilding following the war\, as well as the construction of homes that lifted millions out of tenements and slums. Its value can be seen in how it cropped up in imagery from the time\, and it’s that imagery\, as well as an examination of the panels themselves and their modern descendants that takes pride of place in this ArkDes exhibition. \nFlying Panels\, ArkDes\, on display until Mar 2020 \nPhoto: ‘Thanks\, cranes!’\, Yu Cherepanov\, Crocodile\, No. 24\, 1969\, Soviet Union

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Den futuristiska orten
DESCRIPTION:The set-up of this exhibition is simple – in both the suburbs and countryside today\, we see similar problems. Both suffer from depopulation as their young people move away in search of opportunity\, as well as the withdrawal of social services. But in both\, there are movements looking for a way forward. In Den futuristiska orten\, Tensta Konsthall looks for the green shoots of the future revival of these areas in art. Christian Nyampeta\, Joar Nango\, Anne Low and Seokyeong Kang are the contributing artists in a multi-disciplinary exhibition. \nDen futuristiska orten\, Tensta Konsthall\, on display until Jan 19 \nPhoto: Jean-Baptiste Béranger

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Mud Muses
DESCRIPTION:Moderna Museet’s new exhibition Mud Muses is a deep dive into art\, technology and the environment\, focusing on its development over the last 50 years. Part of the exhibition looks into the museum’s own history and its early exhibitions on man and machine\, and looks back on them from a modern perspective. Featuring the work of over 20 artists\, it takes its name from combine painter Robert Rauschenberg’s installation Mud Muses and writer Ursula Le Guin’s essay A Rant About Technology. \nMud Muses – A Rant About Technology\, Moderna Museet\, opens Oct 12 \nPhoto: Ian Cheng\, Installation photo from Serpentine Galleries\, 2018 © Ian Cheng\, Courtesy of Pilar Corrias\, London and Gladstone Gallery\, New. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Edward Burne-Jones
DESCRIPTION:Pre-Raphaelite is a curiously counter-intuitive term for those outside the art world – it actually describes a movement which occurred after the celebrated Raphael’s era\, which rejected his legacy and attempted to return to the more complex style that existed before him. English artist Edward Burne-Jones was a vivid member of that movement\, and now a collection of his work is coming to Stockholm. A section of an earlier Tate London exhibition has been re-engineered and now makes its home at Prins Eugens Waldermarsudde in the form of Edward Burne-Jones – Prerafaeliterna och Norden\, opening in September.\nEdward Burne-Jones\, Waldermarsudde\, opens Sep 14 \nPhoto: Edward Burne-Jones\, Love and the Pilgrim\, Tate\, London 2017

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Sebastião Salgado
DESCRIPTION:Capitalism is brutal and blood-soaked everywhere\, but in Brazil it’s always barely bothered to hide that fact\, as anyone keeping an eye on Jair Bolsonaro’s government and its rancher allies burning the rainforest and displacing native peoples for a quick buck can see. Those events make Sebastião Salgado’s exhibition at Fotografiska especially timely. Here’s another look at how that process manifests\, with his photographs from the Serra Pelada gold mine\, once the world’s biggest surface gold deposit\, showcasing the hardships and struggle of desperate people giving everything in the slim hope of a better life. \nSebastião Salgado – Gold\, Fotografiska\, on display until Nov 17 \nPhoto: Sebastião Salgado

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Scarlett Hooft Graafland
DESCRIPTION:The strange power of isolated natural landscapes provides part of the power of Scarlett Hooft Graafland’s photographs\, and the surrealist forms she inserts into them take the images to a whole other level. Graafland travels the world armed with a rucksack and camera\, and uses these wild wide spaces as her canvas\, upon which she creates her artworks\, often involved the local people. It all comes together in photos that capture some of the enormity of their location\, and you can see them at Fotografiska in this exhibition. \nScarlett Hooft Graafland: Vanishing Traces\, Fotografiska\, on display until Sep 8 \nPhoto: Sweating Sweethearts by Scarlett Hooft Graafland

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: The Craft Of Swedish Game Design
DESCRIPTION:When you play a video game\, you have a little world inside your TV\, computer or phone that you get to enter. But what goes into the making of those worlds? This exhibition offers a glimpse into the work of five Swedish studios who work in the visual and narrative creation of video games\, building characters and locations both in terms of artistic design and backstory. We see the creation process\, all the way from hand-drawn sketches\, in this collaboration with Illustratörcentrum (The Centre for Illustration and Graphic Design. \nThe Craft Of Swedish Game Design\, ArkDes\, on display until Aug 25 \nPhoto: Concept Sketch for Unravel by Dick Adolfsson\, for Coldwood Interactive. © Coldwood Interactive

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highligt: Fornasetti
DESCRIPTION:The Italian artist and designer Piero Fornasetti was known for the many arrows in his quiver – his career took him everywhere from paintings to furniture design. After spending the Second World War in exile in Switzerland\, he returned to Milan and started his collaboration with Giò Pontis\, where Pontis’ designed furniture which Fornasetti decorated. Fornasetti later continued to design\, with his wall-plates featuring the face of the opera star Lina Cavalieri (from the series Tema e Variazioni) perhaps some of his most famous works. He also painted and drew throughout his life. This exhibition at Artipelag takes on the difficult task of trying to pack as much Fornasetti as possible into a single room. \nFORNASETTI: Inside Out Outside In\, Artipelag\, opens Jun 14 \nPiero Fornasetti. SUMMARY:Art Highlight: Transformationer
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve been to Nationalmuseet recently\, you’ve probably seen their collection of art from the Swedish and international achieves dating back from the 1500s. But what if you could get a little deeper what’s going on in the photos? That’s the aim of the museum’s collaboration with Stadsteatern\, Transformationer\, where actors will help assist in bringing four works from the museum’s collection to life\, and exploring the body ideals\, poses and hierarchies they contain. Somewhere between a performance and a tour of the museum’s collection\, it runs in April and May. \nTransformationer\, Nationalmuseet\, opens Apr 23 \nImage: Martin van Meytens\, Sackska family painting\, 1730 – 1731\, Oil on canvas.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Framtiden Börjar Här
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibition at ArkDes\, imported from the V&A in London\, the idea is to look towards the future without the sense of doom we usually do. It features 80 innovations of the far and near future\, looking at how technology might respond to the challenges and voids of our time. Examples include cryo-preservation\, wearable tech and more. The exhibition also explores the ethical questions behind these technologies – is the way they will change the world really for the better? When certain possibilities open up\, should we hesitate about taking them? As the exhibition text says\, “it is up to us to create the future we want”. \nFramtiden Börjar Här\, ArkDes\, on display until Aug 4 \nPhoto: Cryotherapy Kit\, Photo by Johan Dehlin

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Here’s Looking At You
DESCRIPTION:Here’s an exhibition that’s obligatory for the photographer nerds. The Hasselblad Foundation’s collection provides the source material for Sven Harry’s new exhibition Here’s Looking At You\, curated by the cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (known for his work on films like Her\, Interstellar\, Spectre). The exhibition’s main obsession is the intimacy of eye contact\, as the photographs’ subjects stare down the camera and out at the viewer. “When the museum was granted access to the Hasselblad Foundation’s unique collection of photographs\, we asked ourselves how we could best create a unique show and a whole new way to experience photography”\, says Dragana Kusoffsky Maksimović\, CEO of Sven-Harry’s. “We realised that what we were looking for was a curator who could interpret the collection in a completely new and exciting way. With this in mind\, choosing Hoyte van Hoytema\, a brilliant cinematographer\, felt just right and we’re very happy about and grateful for his participation and contribution to the exhibition. It has been fascinating to see what happens when a cinematographer curates an exhibition of stills”. \nHere’s Looking At You\, Sven Harry’s Art Museum\, on display until May 19 \nPhoto: Elina Brotherus\, Le Nez de Monsieur Cheval\, 1999\, from the series Suites françaises

SUMMARY:Exhibition Highlight: Expressionist Masterpieces
DESCRIPTION:Early twentieth-century Germany was the home of expressionism\, and this exhibition at Millesgården brings a sample of that output to Stockholm\, courtesy of a loan from the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Swittzerland and the Osthaus-Museum Hagen collection in Germany. It features over 150 works produced between 1905 and 1938 from artists including Emil Nolde\, Otto Mueller and Max Pechstein and groups like Der Blaue Reiter and Die Brücke. Europe’s post-industrial flux was reflected in the art produced by these groups – you’ll have the chance to explore them this spring and summer. \nExpressionistiska Mästerverk\, Millesgården\, on display until June 9 \nPhoto: Max Pechstein\, Lying Girl\, 1910\, Pechstein Hamburg Tökendorf
