Increasingly in the news recently is the prominence of fantasy, and the idea of a lot of people deciding to indulge their fantastical visions of the world rather than confront it head-on. The journalist Kurt Andersen’s book Fantasyland, a history of America from the point of view of its unreality issues, hit the New York Times bestsellers list last year. In this climate, it seems appropriate to bring Miguel de Cervantes’ reality-challenged Don Quixote back to life again. That’s what Folkoperan are doing, with an operatic version of the novel hitting their stage this autumn, with Lars Arvidson in the title role.
