Tommy Hilding, Turner-View, 2015

Tommy Hilding is quite the regular at Galleri Magnus Karlsson – in fact, this is his 12th solo exhibition at the contemporary gallery. Escapeland is an exploration of the way in which we continue to treat the natural world, despite our scientific advancement. Despite this, there’s nothing didactic about Hilding’s work. It’s so technically brilliant that it’s essentially objective in appearance. In fact, you’d be forgiven for mistaking his work as photography at times.

Our so-called estrangement from nature is perhaps best demonstrated by how Hilding situates the viewer in his work. We’re often detached, yet straining to see the natural world through some semi-transparent surface, be it through a window or through a thin veil of haze. (Side note: Hilding’s deft talent at reproducing grubby, smeared glass is almost worth a visit alone). It’s melancholy, moving stuff.
Hilding’s recent solo exhibitions include : Örebro Konsthall (2015), Galleri Magnus Karlsson (2014, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2006, 2003, 2000, 1998),

Tommy Hilding – Escapeland is on display until 18 December at Galleri Magnus Karlsson.
